Movie Info

Steven Soderbergh surprises us with a gentle black comedy that follows the developing relationship between an old, cynical artist, Julian Sklar, and his would-be assistant, Lori Butler. While Ian McKellen clearly revels in the character, giving us withering put-downs and wonderfully funny throwaway lines (the dressing gown!), Michaela Coen treats us to an astonishing, can’t-take-your-eyes-off-her performance on the big screen. Underneath the brilliant wordplay between these two characters, there’s a bit of a caper going on, started by Sklar’s greedy children (James Corden and Baby Reindeer’s Jessica Gunning), as they push Lori to complete a series of Sklar’s paintings of Christopher before their hopefully not-too-distant father’s death. (James Conway)
